Measurement units

    Hmm.

I can't find a difference between input creation units of 0.5 inch and 1/2 inch.

I work in mm always, but in sketch rectangle, entered 0.5 inch and 1/2 inch with measured output as 12.70000000 x,y identical.

With resulting face, select move copy  =  2 identical faces.

One face pulled 0.5 inch, the other face 1/2 inch = 2 Bodies

    Revolve one body 90 deg

Using 'Combine' with 'keep cutter' deselected - operation OK.

Undo. do not revolve, move body 2 partially into body 1. Combine cut - operation OK.

Undo, move body 2 fully into body 2. Combine cut - operation not allowed.

No rotation of body, just move translation to partial overlap.

Perhaps, there is some mathmatical rounding with differing units and perhaps these are imported parts, not DSM original parts.

I have found this in DSM options and DSM 'Help pages'...

i can not reproduce any eror with DSM created Face / Parts.

Lets move the faces using labels in an annotation plane...

Lets try setting in 'Options', document with Imperial units ( not mm )

i can not reproduce a difference between inch decimal and inch fraction for 0.5 /1/2 and 0.25 / 1/4 .

Can you replicate the problem please...

Here is a link to screen capture: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsYxz89-EHg).

    If I remember correctly 5-1/2in (2x6) pieces came from enlarging a 3-1/2in (2x4) piece by 2, and 5.5in pieces came from reducing a 7-1/4 (2x8) piece by 1.75.

Perhaps the apparent inaccuracy is due to how the unit option settings are.

There is a difference between what the label says the face separation is and the real distance.

    You have to be careful...

I do not believe this 2 objects have the exact same height - Please measure the parts using the Caliper icon or using the 'e' key as a shortcut. To find highest level of accuracy, set the measure tool options for 'Display' precision to 8 max.

IF not done, it is easy to be wrong.

You are correct. Decimal measurement is actually 5.5003. But, increasing the number of units slows the app even more, and changing a visibility of a layer takes about a minute with no increase in CPU activity. DSM4 seems to starts slowing down with increased accuracy and the number of layers, components and objects. I am using Dell 6540 with Win7 and i7 processor. DSM4 does not accept Direct3D11, nor WARP, nor OpenGL, even though it shows them as options, it always reverts to Direct3D9. DSM5 does not recognize Direct3D9 and reverts to 'Disabled', therefore, cannot display graphics.

Thanks for your time and effort, much appreciated.

THIS is the actual reason i now believe.

But first, you should question why without any change in settings the two labels display differently ? - one in inch decimel and the other in inch fraction ?

It is because the size in inch fraction is an approximation i believe.

'You are correct. Decimal measurement is actually 5.5003' - well, i'm pleased to have found it.

'But, increasing the number of units slows the app even more'

The measure Caliper icon with 8 display decimels does effect the processing calculation maths.

', and changing a visibility of a layer takes about a minute with no increase in CPU activity. DSM4 seems to starts slowing down with increased accuracy and the number of layers, components and objects. '

Are you putting parts/bodies into separate components - this could improve system responsiveness. No matter what is displayed, the hidden / off parts are still there ( rmb> Inverse Visibility ) and being rotated as well ( in math) when the display position is changed.

'I am using Dell 6540 with Win7 and i7 processor. DSM4 does not accept Direct3D11, nor WARP, nor OpenGL,'

I used DSM 4 with OpenGL using Nvidia K4000 although i found  Direct 3D11 to be slightly faster with more crisp graphics.

'even though it shows them as options, it always reverts to Direct3D9.'

Have you done a graphics card check?

DSM5 does not recognize Direct3D9 and reverts to 'Disabled', therefore, cannot display graphics.

'Thanks for your time and effort, much appreciated.'

    No problem - i learn't something to...

FYI, In V5, New sketcher constraints and enhanced solid graphics also slows fps quite a lot. V6 fixes this.

I find Splines surfaces to be very data dense, an auto 'active' mouse can 'grab' the display causing slowness. Important for geometry to be at a low graphical display setting to maximise screen responsiveness and reduce file sizes.

    These option settings helped me...

    It

It doesn't help you right now but i find V5 to be much less freezing and the back-up restore works well. I work on a 7 y/o Lenovo WS ( S30) E5-1660v2 and it's just about OK. Nvidia K4200, 15k HD, 64 GB 1866 Mhz ram.

    Is V6 available? I can't find it.

    Richard,

In case i missed it in that other post reply - V5 is current. V6 i don't know when.
