    DesignSpark Mechanical

    Hi Daniel,

That screenshot was from the first beta of DSM 4.0 but the developer later told us it was being mistakenly included. We agree it can be quite a powerful & desirable feature and that is why the developer has presently reserved it for the full paid upgrade:

    http://www.spaceclaim.com/en/ANSYS-SpaceClaim-trial-DSM-UI-campaign.aspx

There is a chance we consider inclusion of scripting with a low cost add-on, but it is subject to discussion with ANSYS.

The full suite of ANSYS SpaceClaim products: https://www.ansys.com/products/3d-design/ansys-spaceclaim

    Kind regards,

The full SpaceClaim is overpriced for what it does. Small shops or sole proprietors cannot afford it.

I'm looking for alternatives to single seat modeling / paperspace documents with scripting API (or C# modeling extensions.)

I'm comparing against SketchUp Pro 695 US and Rhinoceros 995 US. Both have scripting.

    ----

As of now DS Mechanical + Drawing Add-on is 540 US, but lacks scripting.

    ---

Please encourage ANSYS to create a Scripting Add-on for ~ 150 US. Any more and DS would not be competitive.

I've been involved with SketchUp API development for 10+ years and IMO it was it's API that made SketchUp spread like wildfire. I think DSM could see the same kind of growth with a better forum, better way to log feature requests, and scripting / add-ons.

I'm not sure I'd agree that SpaceClaim is overpriced for what it does. SpaceClaim has many powerful features not in SketchUp Pro or Rhinoceros. True, they have some unique features of their own (especially Rhino) but are aimed at different markets. I'd say that SpaceClaim is more of a competitor to PTC Creo - which has similar pricing (but still not as capable).

    Daniel,

SpaceClaim also is available to rent for around £900/year in the UK. That is, it's not bad value IF it's your primary design tool and you're getting paid for design or your products are selling.

As it stands now, i don't believe that SpaceClaim will get the development budget that say Creo / SolidEdge / SolidWorks . I think ANSYS has wanted SpaceClaim for what it has developed - 'ANSYS Discovery Live' and the ability to lease that technology to PTC and others which it has successfully achieved.

I asked a UK Ansys VAR about add-on packages for Spaceclaim, like Data Management and i was told, no - nothing like that, SpaceClain 'is what it is'... the conversation died shortly after that!

But, it still is a very good design package and i really like what it does for the price...if i had a current (good paying) design job, for sure i'd lease SpaceClaim ...Now i know DSM warts and the workarounds, i'm quite relaxed.

You're obviously very experienced - I have no idea if your comments re scripting get to the right people on here...

Please raise an 'enhancement' - I'd vote for it. i like the way it's implimented in Rhino!

OH, i now see there has been an 'official reponse'...i'm just babbling on here...
