A FAQ describing the PCB Part Library and using Library Loader has been produced

How do I use PCB Part Library with Library Loader

The use of Library Loader is the recommended method of accessing parts from the online library resource.

  • Christopher Poole

I'm back to DesignSpark PCB after a lengthy break and a new computer. I've installed the latest version of DesignSpark and the new Library Loader (in that order), but I'm at a loss how to make the new set up work in anything like a user friendly way. I'll spare the details of the nausious process I've had to go through to download data for just one component, but it appears from an error message that the Library Loader is "Unable to launch/connect to DesignSpark PCB. Please check installation, and try again." Check what? DesignSpark was installed first, then the Library Loader. I've run the loader both with DesignSpark open and closed - it makes no difference. Any suggestions as to what I should check?

Hello Christopher, The two essential settings as detailed in the Library Loader "Help" link are:

    1. Make sure you select your Windows Download folder (Not a DesignSpark PCB library folder), it is here the component data is downloaded to and then extracted to your selected DesignSpark PCB library.

    2. The DesignSpark PCB Library is chosen via the "Settings" button. The library chosen must be enabled within DesignSpark PCB (Check in the Library Manager -> "Folders" tab).

If you have set it up correctly as above and still have issues please contact our support team by the "submit a request" button and they will help to resolve the issue.

Many thanks. Unfortunately I've already done most of what you suggested - there are no libraries visible in the Library Manager, and the Settings button (or drop down) leads only to preferences which again only allows a selection of the tech folder. There is nowhere I can find where one sets the path to the libraries. Nevertheless, I have ensured that all my libraries from the original, through versions 5.0, 6.0, and 7.1 are in the same place that version 8.0 put its library, namely Users>Public>Documents. None are visible in library manager, so look out help desk, here I come.

As to the Library Loader, if I start that first, it opens Design Spark PCB but still reports the same error if I run a search then double click the zip folder in Downloads. I thought the whole process was supposed to be automatic. I'll have one more go at this and if there is still no success, I'll have to risk using my old laptop (which is dying) and use V7.1 and the components that I downloaded/created in 2014.

I may be wrong, but you say "I have ensured that all my libraries from the original, through versions 5.0, 6.0, and 7.1 are in the same place that version 8.0 put its library, namely Users>Public>Documents", have you used the next folder i.e.

    Users>Public>Documents>DesignSpark PCB 8.0>Library

If you used the path you mention DSPCB may not find them unless you map to them in the library manger.

Library Loader may also be looking in the wrong place unless you have set it up to use the folder you mention.

Just a thought but it sounds like a common error between the two problems.

OK. When I installed DSPCB it created a folder called DesignSpark PCB 8.0 in Users>Public>Documents>. In it there are further folders called "Examples" "Library" "Report Templates" and "Technology".

Similarly, the previous versions created folders called respectively DesignSpark PCB, DesignSpark PCB 5.0, DesignSpark PCB 6.0 and DesignSpark PCB 7.1. All have sub folders with the same names as in 8.0 except for the first, which has one additional folder called "DownloadedLibrary". So to follow your example, I have directories (folders) whose paths are:

    Users>Public>Documents>DesignSpark PCB>Library

    Users>Public>Documents>DesignSpark PCB 5.0>Library

    Users>Public>Documents>DesignSpark PCB 6.0>Library

    Users>Public>Documents>DesignSpark PCB 7.1>Library

    Users>Public>Documents>DesignSpark PCB 8.0>Library

I would expect all to be visible to Library Manager, and none are.

Just to be clear about Library Loader, I understood from the tutorial that I should point it (with the Browse button) to where my web browser saves downloaded files, in this case the component .zip files containg data for a multitude of design platforms, namely "This PC>Downloads" (which translates to C:\Users\Developer\Downloads), and it should then automatically unzip and extract only the DSPCB data, and place it in the 8.0 library; which it doesn't. Clearly I'm missing something, but as Library Loader can't find DSPCB even though it's in its default installation folder (I changed nothing) I am still at a loss.

Anyway I've contacted support as suggested and await their assistance, but if you have any other suggestions in the meantime they'd be more than welcome.

    Hi Christopher,

I faced a similar problem. Library Loader always said "Unable to launch/connect to DesignSpark PCB..."

When I looked into the Library Manager of DesignSpark, the list was empty. For me it seemed that the default library folder was not accessible by DesignSpark (I use a non-administrator Windows user). So I created a new folder somewhere else (e.g. C:\designsparklibs) where I copied everything that I found in the DesignSpark PCB 8.0 folder in c:\users\public\documents. In the Library Manager I added the subfolder c:\designsparklibs\DesignSpark PCB 8.0\Library to the folder list. Now all libraries are loaded. Then I created an empty library called "user" for schematic, symbols and components.

In Library Loader I was now able to set the libraries. I selected the user-library for all three fields and now it works!

Hi Martin, I'm interested in your post. You created a new folder and then copied everything from the DSPCB V8 Library folder to that and then enabled it in the Library Manager. Did you attempt to locate and enable the original installed library first?

Just trying to understand why you appeared to have the original installed library but that was not enabled by the normal process? I also have my Windows as a non-admin user.

I just checked it again on another PC.

New installation of DSPCB v8 with admin account. After installation everything works fine, even Library Loader.

Then I tried the non-admin account, wich showed the same errors described above. I figured out, that the library folder in DSPCB pointed to "C:\users\public\documents\DesignSpark PCB\library". This directory does not exist. changing it to "C:\users\public\documents\DesignSpark PCB 8.0\library" solves the problem. Indeed copying to a new folder is not needed.

    Hello Martin,

Thank you for confirming this and we will discuss with our developers to hopefully resolve in a future release.

    Hello Martin,

You stated "Then I tried the non-admin account, which showed the same errors described above. I figured out, that the library folder in DSPCB pointed to "C:\users\public\documents\DesignSpark PCB\library". This directory does not exist. changing it to "C:\users\public\documents\DesignSpark PCB 8.0\library" solves the problem."

Can you raise a support ticket using the "submit a request" link such I can discuss further with you.

A correction will be in V8.1 which should resolve the issue, but I would like to confirm the precise installation details to check your situation will also be corrected.

When DesignSpark PCB is installed it sets values in the registry for that user. If you switch to another user those registry values are not read and the folder will not be mapped correctly. This will be corrected by the option of installing for all user or current user. It is this area I wish to explore to ensure that your experiences matches the proposed solution.
