Inconsistancy -- DSM overrides my chosen rotation direction.

    Instead of starting to drag. Just select the direction arrow 'note which way the arrow is facing' and type the angle.

     i want to say this...It's appears to be a bug...all these niggly, inconsistent irritations are worth reporting i feel.'

    However i'm also tempted to saying that there is a specific 'recommended' working methodolodgy that can't be gleamed from the help pages.

    The normal 'CAD Training route is offered by VARS as an additional service - so software vendors aren't always perfect with their 'tell you everything' help pages - or it gets left behind for a reason or two, nope - dozen !

    Anyway, i think if the RED axis were located onto that vertical line - the software might behave or, it might be a bug!

    worth a try...

    I'd worked out how to work around it, but I'd still like to know how to avoid it.

    There are a couple of reasons why I habitually start rotations & translations by dragging:

    1. If you want to copy instead of move, dragging with the ctrl key down is the only way I'm aware of to do that.
    2. It allows me to quickly see that I'm moving ONLY that which I want to move, and I can hit escape to stop it if not. (Think: the ever annoying, haven't yet turn off Maintain connectivity. (Why oh why does that default to on; and why can't I configure the default in the same way you can set the Pull default to No merge.))
    3. Its just my preferred way to work.

    But the problem here is not how to find a work around for this on the rare occasions when it happens, it's the interuption to my thought processes that occurs when it does.

    Worst case is when I don't notice the reversal -- as happened yesterday when I was cribbing a website regarding left & right hand spiral gears -- and then went on to construct the entire gear right handed instead of left handed.

    I used the Move direction tool to align the move handle, and it chooses how it aligns it. I'm unaware of any method by which to tell it which of the linear translation handles should be aligned with the line?

    I just click to tool and the the line, it makes all the decisions.

    Hi Buk.

    Just chatting - i know you have your own methods...

    For the copy move without ctrl drag, ctrl c, v the selection, them move etc ( move command stays active AND only the new items are active upon paste ). this method is quite 'smart' to, as an example, select a blind hole, select another face in any orientation and paste - hole is transplated normal to the face.

    EDIT: This method does paste in the same place for Layout lines outside of their sketches provided a component is active. Within a sketch, curves / layout lines cut and pasted will map their position relative to x,y axes in original cut sketch or any other sketch opened (inc layout ) in any orientation.

    It's possible to have a 2D Layout with many layers without any surfaces or other bodies / comps etc. This may be inserted into another file. Within another component, inserted layout file entities can be copy pasted making faces >pulling into bodies as usual.

    Multiple 2D layouts can be inserted ( and changed as normal inserted file operstion) forming the basis for 3D progression.

    The move maintaining sketch connectivity i really appreciate in adjusting 2d layouts. Turned off it's off for that file whilst it's open. Agree though, it can't be set one way in options...

    Just an additional working means after pondering on  ' An exciting development' comment in V4 notes - see below...

    Also, there's something else that came around in V4...concerns moving curve/ copying curves by end points using new functionality to break the connectivity interactively.

    Do you use gifcam?

    If so, if you hit ctrl-U on the main window, it offers a customisation option "Always capture cursor".

    I was working with gifcam v5 - it's now v6.5. Is it what you use ? Your edited loops of revolving gears is something i'd like to do...

    Yes, 6.5.

    The revolving gear loops are created by capturing one frame at a time using the [frame] button.

    Position the gears with the viewpoint you want to see, and size gifcam to capture it. Click frame. Revolve one gear by some amount, revolve the other gear by a commensurate amount (subject to the gear ratio); and click frame again. Repeat until you've revolved both by one tooth. Then save.

    The hard part is making sure that the view doesn't change between frames. I had trouble with that until I thought to split the screen. Setup the capture in one and do the revolving in the other. Makes it quick and simple.:

    This took < 3 minutes to capture the 13 frames required to revolve the gears by one tooth, 1° at a time:

    But you do have to make sure that none of the on screen tools are in the picture :)

    I feel like I just snapped a wedding photo with my finger over the lens :)

    Why i haven't 'got it' fully before i really don't know.

    DSM / Spaceclaim examples never show you this on youtube ( my training portal ), so i've never really experimented and 'stuck it out' with Layouts... hmm, but this discovery will really help more as i like tinkering in 2D - esp internal design aspects, as much as possible...

    seemingly it's all fairly modifiable - local constraints may be applied or use traditional methods.

    Tim, I'm having trouble understanding what it is that you are showing me here.

    By "Layouts", do you mean the 'Draw layout curves' sketch option? Used in conjunction with Layers?

    I can see that if you have an existing  2D sketch that you import, say a DXF, then pulling faces upto lines to create a 3D solid is useful; but that said, I already do that using construction lines in a component, with the added advantage that I can convert construction lines back to real lines any time.

    Still waiting to see something that I can do with Latout curves (and layers and constraints) that I cannot do without them, and without all the faff.

    For example, if I could construct a 2D representation of a metric thread and save it in a file, and when I want a thread, load the file, scale it to the pitch I need, lengthen it to the length I need and then revolve it into 3D, that would be useful. But I cannot see how to do that?

    I wanted to share a revelation in design methodolgy...i started off on a drawing board and only progressed to 2D in my early 30's.

    Before 3D CAD, there was 2D - Much in 2D can be theorised, puzzled over and finally optimised without needing the 3rd dimension. 2D is very visually informative for internal parts especially cylindrical parts and very fast to modify.

    I was hoping to show 2D design principles using sketch's with 'Create Layout Curves' on and using layers to colour ( layer isolate) the individual parts.

    I also showed why 'Maintain Sketch Connectivity' can assist design - especially in 2D - i understand your grumble about not having a permanant option off setting.

    The 'arrangement' shown has fairly complicated connections - in 2D these are easily shown with clear meaning, this is not so clear in 3D !

    Also i showed when adding new geometry, new constraints ( icons showing) can be applied to existing geometry.

    These 'Layouts' can be inserted into 3D files in various postions for 3D examination/ perusal and 3D extrapolation if all OK.

    Alterations to these 'Layouts' will be update in 3D files or vise versa for further ongoing design development.

    I would have used this design methodology better in my optical instrument / apparatus design a few years ago had i known more about it.

    As to threads, make up indivdual cutter pitch profiles - which i think you already do. We don't have macro programming sadly.
